MATERIALS FAQs

What is gold-filled?

Gold-filled consists of a base metal (usually brass, a mixture of copper and zinc) bonded with a layer of karat gold over top. Gold filled is legally required to contain 5% or 1/20 gold by weight.

All our gold-filled jewelry is 14k yellow gold filled, except our 12k gold-filled beaded bracelets. All the bonded gold was 14k solid gold, to begin with. This can be described as either 14/20 gold-filled or 14k gold-filled.

Gold-fill will never lose its gold content, like its plated counterparts.

What is sterling silver?

Our sterling silver contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. Sometimes other companies will have other metals besides just copper in that 7.5%; ours does not.

If I have sensitive ears can I wear your jewelry?

Yes. Gold-filled is considered hypoallergenic and great for those with sensitivities. We have customers who have only been able to wear solid gold jewelry in the past and have never had any issues with our jewelry. That being said, everyone is different, and there are always exceptions. For the most part, though, none of our customers have had any issues.

We use 10k solid gold solder to solder our posts onto our earrings, which helps add an extra coat of gold to any exposed metal so you aren’t exposed to the base metal.

Like gold-filled, goldun has gold-filled posts soldered on with 10k solid gold. This ensures you are only being exposed to solid gold. So far, those with sensitivities have been able to wear goldun without issues.

Our sterling silver is also nickel and cadmium free. It's considered hypoallergenic. However, with that said, some people are sensitive to silver because of its copper content. So if you are allergic to copper, we wouldn't recommend it.

What's the difference between filled and plated?

Gold filled has almost 100 times more gold than gold-plated jewelry. Gold-filled is much more durable and will not chip away like gold-plated. The gold on gold-plated jewelry will chip off and rub away over time. Gold-filled does not do this.

Does your jewelry contain nickel, cadmium or lead?

All our jewelry is nickel, cadmium and lead free. It's all considered hypoallergenic and safe for those with sensitive skin.

What is the difference between 10k and 14k solid gold?

10k gold contains 41.7% pure gold, and 14k contains 58.3% pure gold. 10k gold is stronger than 14k gold. Other metals have been added to pure gold to strengthen it.

What is the difference between white, yellow, and rose gold?

Pure gold is bright yellow. Other alloys are mixed with gold to change its colour and strength. White gold usually contains 25% nickel and zinc. To make rose gold, copper is added. Why tend to not work with white gold as a lot of people are allergic to nickel and it doesn't make for the best metal.

Will this jewelry leave green/black marks on my skin?

On infrequent occasions, gold, goldun, gold-filled, and sterling silver can leave black marks on the skin. This is not because the quality is low; it’s because the alloy added to these metals can sometimes discolour the skin. Everyone is different, and everyone reacts to metals differently. Sometimes moisture, sweat, minerals in water, and lotions can cause a reaction to the metals and turn your skin a different colour.

f this happens your jewelry might be dirty. Give it a good clean with a polishing cloth or dish soap and water.

ALL ABOUT GOLDUN

What is goldun?

It’s a gold and alloy compound containing 12-13% pure gold. The alloy mixture includes silver, tin, zinc, and a small amount of copper. All solid gold compounds contain an alloy mixture, and Goldun contains a significantly higher proportion. It can be considered roughly 3k gold, which contains 12.5% pure gold.

It is free of lead, cadmium, and nickel, making it ideal for those with sensitivities. All the earrings are hypoallergenic.

What is so great about goldun?

It wears similar to solid gold without the high price point. It isn’t plated, so the gold will never wear away. You can polish it to look new again, which means you can wear it repeatedly.

How does it compare to other gold products?

Gold is very soft, which means you can scratch it with your fingernail. To strengthen and harden it for durability, alloys or other metals are added.

You determine the karat of the gold based on how much pure gold it contains. Pure gold is 24k. 18k contains 75% gold, which is 18/24. 14k contains 58.3%, or 14/24. 10k contains 41.7% gold, or 10/24. Goldun contains 12.5% gold, or 3/24. Anything under 8k gold isn’t considered solid gold in Canada and the UK.

While Goldun isn’t solid gold, it contains significantly more gold than gold-filled, gold-plated, or gold vermeil jewelry.

Gold-filled jewelry contains 5% solid gold, meaning that if the piece is 14k gold-filled, it includes 5% 14k gold. However, since 14k gold contains 58.3% pure gold, the piece only has 2.9% pure gold content.

Gold-plated pieces contain roughly 0.05-1% solid gold, depending on the thickness of the plate. This means that they have even less gold.

Gold vermeil, a gold-plated piece with a sterling silver base, can contain anywhere from 0.05% to 5% solid gold. This means that if a piece is plated with 14k gold, it will contain a maximum of 2.9% pure gold. Like any gold-plated item, gold vermeil can also flake away.

How will it wear over time?

Like 10k and 8k gold, it will tarnish over time. However, unlike gold-plated pieces, you can polish it to restore its original shine.

Why not just use gold-filled?

Gold-filled material can not be cast, as the gold is already bonded to the base metal. I get all my gold-filled raw materials in sheet or wire form. Goldun is made by melting down the different metals, so I can make molds and cast this material. It allows for varying designs and more complex pieces.

Why the name goldun?

I wanted a name to signify a new material representing the unique mixture of gold and a high percentage of alloys. The primary alloys are Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), and Silver (Ag). I took the u and n from the atomic symbols for Copper and Zinc to add to the Gold, just like the compound. I love word play and chemistry, so the two combined felt fitting. Not only that, but I like the sound of it.

JEWELRY CARE

Can I wear my jewelry in the shower?

Sometimes. We don't recommend wearing any of our chains as soap and water can build up between the links, which can cause discolouration and can lead to the chain looking dull. You can, however, wear our rings and earrings in the shower. Just switch out your earrings and clean off any soap buildup.

Be careful with goldun and sterling silver, as sometimes minerals in your water can oxidize the metal. If your jewelry tarnishes or oxidizes, you can always polish it with the polishing cloth or scrub it with soap and water.

Can I wear my jewelry while swimming?

Sometimes. Water build-up can discolour the links in your chains, but all our rings and earrings are safe to wear while swimming on occasion. If you expose it for long periods, chlorine will eventually leach the gold out of your jewelry. It’s best to remove all your gold jewelry, even higher karat, when exposing it to water chemicals.

Be sure to rinse your jewelry in fresh water after a dip in the ocean.

How do I clean my jewelry?

You can use the polishing cloth with your order or dish soap and an old toothbrush to scrub away any grime.

How do I care for my jewelry?

Your jewelry will need less maintenance the less you bathe with it and expose it to water. Take off your jewelry before applying oils and sunscreen. Keep your jewelry in a box or bag to keep its sparkle.

Nothing we sell is plated, so you can always polish it to bring back its original shine if it is exposed to the elements.

STONES & SETTINGS FAQs

What are the 4 Cs of buying a diamond.

When discussing white diamonds, the 4 Cs refer to cut, clarity, colour, and carat. The cut is how well the diamond goes from excellent to poor, i.e., is the diamond symmetrical? The clarity measures the amount of inclusions in a diamond. The colour is based on a scale from near colourless, D, to yellow, Z. The carat refers to the size of the diamond. It’s based on the weight in carats. The larger the carat, the larger the diamond.

What is a salt & pepper diamond?

A Salt & Pepper diamond is a stone that has both black and white inclusions, creating that starry, speckled appearance. The natural elements that create these one-of-a-kind beauties make them so appealing. You’ll never find two stones with the same mix of details. You can read about them in detail here.

What is the difference between a rose-cut and brilliant-cut stone?

A rose-cut stone is flat on the bottom, while a brilliant-cut stone is pointed. A rose-cut stone can look significantly larger on the surface and still be cut with facets to reflect a good sparkle. You can have a larger-looking stone while paying less. A brilliant-cut stone will let in the most light as the facets on the bottom refract the most light, leading to a brighter and sparklier stone.

What is the difference between a bezel setting and prong setting?

A bezel setting has the metal surrounding the stone, while a prong setting has claws around the stone. A prong setting will let in the most light, making your stone sparkle and shine more. A bezel setting is excellent for those with an active lifestyle as there is no risk of a prong catching on something and bending open. That said, we always make all our prong settings wide, making them exceptionally strong and less likely to open.
